Reminder! Discovery Education/3M Young Scientist Challenge is open for entries-- Encourage your nominated students to enter today!

Now is the time to enter the YSC Challenge.  The top10% of the grades 5 through 8 projects at the Synopsys Championship may apply.
Special incentive prizes will be given out to those who submit their video entries the earliest, so remind your students to enter now! Incentive prizes will be announced online to those students who have registered for the competition, so encourage your nominees to register today!

Please remember that the videos do not have to be highly edited or "produced." Content and communication are the keys to success this year. Remember, students can use their camera phones or digital cameras to make their videos.

Discovery Communications and 3M are pleased to announce that on April 17th, they will launch a series of web-based seminars ("webinars") to encourage and support participation by teachers and students in the YSC. Any teacher or student from anywhere in the world can log onto these free webinars. Please refer to the attached document for a schedule, call-in information, as well as a description of the webinar content!

The competition closes for entries on June 15th, 2008. Semi-Finalists will be announced in July, and Finalists will be announced in August. In October, the top students in the nation will win an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, DC for the competition finals. One student will win a $50,000 savings bond, and the title of "America's Top Young Scientist". Other prizes include:

Teacher Competition--New for 2008!
Remember, you too can compete in this year's competition!! We are excited to announce that in addition to the student challenge, 2008 will feature a teacher competition. Teachers who are members of the Discovery Educator Network (DEN) are invited to enter. Becoming a member of the DEN is easy. Registration is free and only takes a few minutes. To become a member, please go to http://community.discoveryeducation.com/about/become_discovery_educator. DEN teachers will be asked to submit a video entry, as outlined in the official rules and regulations.

In late summer 2008, judges will select the five teachers who will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, DC, for the competition finals.    Teacher finalists will compete in a series of individual and team challenges in front of a live audience. At the end of the competition, judges will  award the top teacher a special prize, and the title of "DEN's Science Teacher of the Year".
